INTRODUCTION TO THE ISLAND OF KAUAI^
^
The northernmost inhabited island of the Hawaiian chain, Kauai is a
landscape with two wholly differing face-north and south. The north
shore is a rugged, verdant terrain that receives significantly more rain
than the south shore. It is also where you'll find the dramatically
beautiful Na Pali coast, a stretch of mountainous coastline defined by
knife-like ridges, hidden shoreline caves and beaches and lush
valleys accessible only by foot, if at all.^
^
On the other side of the island-the south shore-a flatter, sunnier
climate awaits the visitor. Also lush with vegetation and intensely
green, the south shore of Kauai is where Captain James Cook, the
noble British explorer of the Pacific, first made landfall in the Hawaiian
Islands in 1778.^
^
Cook found, as have all travelers and settlers after him, that Kauai is a
proud, independent island. In fact, it was the last of the Hawaiian
islands to be joined to the monarchy that had been established by
King Kamehameha I. And when it did join in 1810, it did not do so
happily, and only after more than a decade of defiance and struggle.^
^
Still today, unlike much of Hawaii, Kauai is an island relatively
untouched by the outside world. Although for many years it has had a
few good hotels and always plenty of splendid natural scenery, only in
the past few years has Kauai gone after the tourist market in an
expansive way.^
Even so, residents of Kauai like the relaxed atmosphere that has
always marked their domain and many do not wish the island to
"become another Waikiki." That attitude will only serve to enhance the
image of Kauai as an experience closer to "the old Hawaii," an image
the island wishes to recapture and cultivate.^
^
For the golfer, Kauai represents some of the finest golfing in the world.
It may as well be called "the Trent Jones, Jr. Island" instead of the
Garden Island, with four courses totaling 81 holes designed by Trent
Jones on Kauai. On the north shore, the resort community of
Princeville now offers 45 holes of Robert Trent Jones, Jr. golf, with the
newest addition being the 18-hole Prince Course, one of the most
difficult and beautiful in the state. The south shore offers a few great
choices, with the two Jack Nicklaus courses at Kauai Lagoons leading
the way in difficulty and scenery. In Poipu, a new 18-hole Robert
Trent Jones, Jr. course has just been completed adjacent to the Hyatt
Regency Kauai hotel, just down the road from the 18-hole Kiahuna
course he built in 1984.
